Dear Editor:

I would like to thank all the people who nominated me to be a grand marshal of the Memorial Day Parade. It was a great honor and I really appreciate it.

Eighty years ago, on June 6, 1943, I hitchhiked to Portland to join the U.S. Navy and that took me to many places but mostly in the Pacific. I ended up marrying a girl from San Francisco so I stayed in California for 40 years, then we retired and came back home in June 1983.

It was a great day and I enjoyed sharing it with Barclay Shepard.
