Get in the (tidal) zone
Ever want to know what makes the tides tick?
Or to see what they do to the plants and animals that call the tidal zone home?
Join Pemaquid Watershed Association from 7 to 10 a.m., Friday, July 26, at the Presge parking lot on Route 130 (past the Bradley Inn) in Bristol for the Intertidal Zone Walk with Dr. Robert Steneck.
In Dr. Steneck's first presentation with PWA, participants can get a closer look at the different zones that comprise the coast of Maine.
Those on the exploration will be able to view the separate levels and zones where the ocean meets the land. At dead-low tide (8:23 a.m. Friday) participants can stand in a kelp forest.
Steneck who teaches Marine Biology and Marine Policy at the School of Marine Sciences, University of Maine, will also cover native and non-native species along the coast, and how that coast is being reshaped due to non-native species, climate change and commercial fishing.
Anyone can sign up, but space is limited to 12 people.
Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear for exploring the tidal zone. There will be some spots where agility is required to get up and over rocks.
Preregistration is required, and must be completed by Thursday, July 25. Preregister by calling PWA at 207-563-2196 or coordinator@pemaquidwatershed.org.
