Friends of the Southport Historical Society meet June 19
The annual meeting of the Friends of the Southport Historical Society will be held at the Southport Town Hall on Monday, June 19 at 7 p.m.
We are pleased to announce that Maine State Historian, Earle G. Shettleworth Jr. will be our guest speaker. He will be discussing and sharing the photographic work of E. Joseph Leighton, the early 20th century Lincoln County photographer who chronicled everyday life in our county on antique glass slides. Leighton traveled extensively, and the talk promises to give us a new perspective on how life went on and how the county looked 100 years ago.
Shettleworth is a Maine native whose interest in Maine’s history dates back to his teen years. He has contributed to the Maine Historic Preservation Commission throughout his career as board member, as architectural Historian, and as director.
The Hendricks Hill Museum will open for the summer on June 27, and it will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Sept. 2. Admission is free, and our enthusiastic and helpful volunteer docents are anxious to share with you the exciting story of Southport’s past!
