Footbridge closed for safety concerns

Boothbay Harbor Town Manager Tom Woodin has announced today that the town footbridge will be closed for an undetermined amount of time.

According to Woodin, "During a routine inspection of the condition of the footbridge by Public Works Director Chris Leeman and Fire Chief Nick Upham on Monday, they discovered a structural concern on the swing span (only) of the bridge. A support beam underneath the swing span contains significant rot and appears to be compromised. As a safety concern, through traffic on the footbridge is being shut down until a structural engineer can do an analysis of the issue and while repair options are under consideration. A representative from Prock Marine took a look at it this morning at our request and his advice was to close the bridge. The town's insurance company will be inspecting the footbridge this afternoon."
