The Boothbay Region Fish & Game Association was unable to hold its annual Kids' Ice Fishing Derby this February due to the current COVID-19 restrictions that limit indoor gatherings. Club officers felt that without a heated clubhouse for kids and adults to come into and get warm and enjoy hot dogs, pizza, and hot chocolate during the event, and for the Awards Ceremony, that it would be best to cancel the derby for 2021.
The club fully expects to hold the event again in February of 2022, and as in the past, most likely on a Saturday during school vacation, with cash awards for the largest five trout caught as well as door prizes for all children who enter the contest.
Wiley Pond remains open for ice fishing for children under the age of 16 through Sunday, Feb. 28. After that it will be closed to all fishing until the start of the open-water fishing season, currently scheduled by the state for April 1.
Updates for the 2022 Kids' Ice Fishing Derby will be posted on the club website at www.brfga.com
