Fire department helps owner of leaky boat
Emergency crews were called to the Murray Hill boat landing in East Boothbay on Tuesday, July 23 to help a boat in distress.
Mike Desisto's 1967 Jonesport wooden hull fishing vessel, the Nancy M was launched earlier that day, but by the time the tide came in, the boat was submerged below the waterline causing a power failure that temporarily disabled the bilge pumps.
The Boothbay Fire Department had to pump out water to keep the boat afloat. “The water almost got to the engine, so it was good timing,” said Boothbay Fire Chief Dick Spofford.
According to Spofford, the boat had been out of service for a couple years, so the wood hadn't swelled yet, making the hull leaky. “It usually takes three days for a boat to swell up. It's usually pretty common.” Spofford said.
