Fill the Bus braves rain for food donations
On a drizzly Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 29, inside a small bus parked in the Hannaford Supermarket parking lot, the number of boxes of pasta and cereal were winning the donation contest over the number of canned goods.
Volunteer Don Dickson expected things would even out, though, as the afternoon progressed. “We’ll get lots of donations after people get out of work,” he said.
The Fill the Bus Food Drive, sponsored by the Boothbay Region YMCA, does this twice a year, in the spring and fall.
Loghan Walker, YMCA youth and membership coordinator, said the donated food items go to the food pantry, located in Boothbay Harbor’s Congregational Church on Eastern Avenue. Both the Fill the Bus food drive and the food pantry welcome all non-perishable items, particularly high demand foods such as coffee, tea, cocoa, juice, cereal, jelly, pancake mix, syrup, soup, canned fruit, sugar, flour, oil, and peanut butter. “The food goes to anyone in need,” Walker said.
