Facts don’t support claims

    Dear Editor:

Your online readers have recently been treated to a letter from a Sean McBreairty, claiming that public schools in Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor (and he also adds, for good measure,” the entire Maine educational system”) are so bad, you should just “pull your kids out immediately.” This is just right-wing political baloney, used here, and around the country to try to undermine public support for the public schools.

The facts do not support Mr. McBreairty’s claims. He’s living in a right-wing world that hates the way public schools work now, a world that is brewing up a stew of divisive and largely inaccurate, out-of-context statements to undermine public confidence in the schools.

If you want to see for yourselves the whole data for our school, or for the state, you can go to the state website at www.maine.gov/doe/dashboard. Once there, use the scroll-down to proceed to data for any school district. You should know that whenever the data reveal a problem, the teachers are aware, and put plans in place to address those problems. No one in the CSD is content with scores that aren’t as good as they can be.

Boothbay Region High School has a staff of dedicated, experienced teachers, and administrators who are going a great job in educating the kids of our region for future jobs, and future education. If you’d like to get a personal update on that, talk to Principal Tricia Campbell, or our Superintendent, Dr. Robert Kahler, or any teacher, or any member of the school committee, to dive into what’s really going on in our high school.
