Downeast Brass Quintet performs free concert
As part of its 10th anniversary year celebration, throughout 2013 the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor has brought in a number of nationally known, Grammy winning acts in addition to local and regional stars.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, the celebration continues with the arrival of the Downeast Brass Quintet in a free, absolutely-last-day-of-summer community concert. Downeast Brass is comprised of musicians from southern and central Maine who enjoy playing a wide range of styles from classical to Dixieland. The music begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Downeast Brass's founder and arranger, Dwight Tibbetts, has kept the unique talents and skills of his colleagues in mind as he has arranged music specifically for the group. From Andy Forster's pristine high trumpet tones to Mark Mumme's full bass sonority, the Downeast Brass combines the skills of some of Maine's premier musicians. Since they are also music educators, they seek to reach audiences of all ages with original and entertaining programming.
Forster's professional experience includes performances with university orchestras and ensembles at University of Maine at Farmington, Bates and Colby colleges, to Brian Nadeau's Big Band, the Mount Washington Hotel Jazz Orchestra, the Brass Maineiacs and numerous others.
Mike Peterson teaches instrumental music in the Messalonskee School District. Peterson was the primary music director for the Waterville Opera House from January of 2005 through April of 2008, and was a guest music director at Colby College in January of 2007. In addition to the Downeast Brass, Mike performs with the Good-Time Sound barbershop quartet.
Mumme is currently a member of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and the Casco Bay Concert Band. He has also played tuba with the Blue Hill Brass Quintet, Mainely Brass, the American Band and the Colby College Orchestra. Mumme is also a bassist who has performed regularly with the Phil Rich Band.
Quintet member Loren Fields, french horn, has performed with the Bangor and Portland Symphonies, as well as numerous local musical theater productions. He has played french horn in the Augusta Wind ensemble and the Manchester Brass Quintet. He has performed on stage with Barry Manilow and Colin Raye.
Trumpeter Tibbetts has studied with Chuck Winfield (formerly of Blood, Sweat and Tears), John Foss, and Dr.Tim Weir (lead player from the University of Miami). He has been coached by members of the Canadian Brass, Fred Shautter (principal trumpeter of the Oregon Symphony), and Allen Vizzutti. Also an accomplished pianist, Tibbetts arranges most of the music performed by the Downeast Brass.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for this free community concert appropriate for all ages. Donations are both welcome and encouraged. The Opera House is located at 86 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor. For additional information call 207-633-6855.
