Down East Yacht Club enjoys ‘Launching Party 2022’

Tue, 06/21/2022 - 11:30am

Saturday, June 11 the weather was great for a day on the water and a land-based party. The DEYC took advantage of the opportunity to celebrate the historical beginning of the DEYC boating season with the annual Launching Party. What better location for the event than Luke’s Boatyard (owners Frank and Nora Luke) in Linekin Bay, East Boothbay.

Appropriately, some DEYC members traveled miles on the water to be in attendance. Salty Paws ( Commodore Jeanne Koenig and Bob Ewing) voyaged from New Jersey, Gratitude (R/C Aaron and Suzanne Rugh) traveled from South Carolina, while Freedom (P/C Steve and Deb Arkley), and Mellady in Sea (Troy and Sandy Hersom) cruised from Florida. Some 100 of our 250 members arrived by land.

Commodore Jeanne Koenig began the fun with a warm welcome and appropriate acknowledgements to many members. Frank and Nora Luke for hosting, AA Kate Winslow, Past AA Jane Mulholland, and Anne and Jeffrey Banger for their work on the roster, Jeff Brown for his illustration on the cover of the roster. Many past officers, committee chairs and members, board of directors and the current Bridge were recognized for their influence on the success of our club. New members and prospective new members were a welcome addition.

V/C Brent Pope, Aaron Rugh and Mooring Share Program Chair, Jan Mildren spoke briefly regarding some pertinent information.

Past Commodore Bob Wheeler gave a moving blessing and recognized those members who have passed on.

Mary Nearn, director of Food and Beverage at Midcoast Hospitality Group, Inc. and Smuggler’s Cove provided the delicious menu.

A sample of the menu: chilled shrimp with cocktail sauce, spicey chicken sliders, smoked salmon salad, haddock chowder, a variety of cheese platters, meats olives and nuts, and a wonderful fruit and shortcake dessert.

On Saturday, June 18, Jane and Dana Mulholland hosted a social gathering at their home at 53 Solon Road, Southport.
