Don't silence the music
Dear Editor:
What a disappointment I felt after reading the article on outdoor music in the Register's Aug. 28 issue. I have come to Boothbay Harbor on vacation for over 25 years. Some of my fondest memories involve listening, from afar, to music in the evening.
For two years, we rented a huge house on Atlantic Avenue, not far from the Rocktide Inn. I remember listening with pleasure to the music coming from the inn even though it was after 10 p.m.
One summer, as we sat on the outside porch of a cottage on the east side of the harbor, we could hear the band playing on the library lawn. As we sat with our cocktails, it was a perfect summer night. I agree with Dorothy Ferrell; music is a sound of summer. Please don't silence it.
One last thing: On reading last winter that the Village Store had closed, remained vacant, and was eventually replaced by something called Tidepools, I was a bit surprised.
It seems that the last thing the downtown area needed was another souvenir-type store. The convenience of having a place downtown that one could run into for necessities will be sorely missed.
