Don’t throw away our vote

Dear Editor:

A recent Register included a letter urging support for the so-called National Popular Vote compact. This pernicious legislation would not only take away Maine's voice on the national stage, it would also disenfranchise Maine's voters. This bill, if passed and activated, would say that regardless of how the people of Maine vote, our electoral votes would go to whomever the voters of California, New York, and Chicago want to be president. Maine could vote 90% for candidate A, but still end up seeing its Electoral College votes cast for the person who got 10% or less of the votes of the people of Maine.

The purpose of the Electoral College is to make sure that smaller states like Maine have a say in the selection of our president. It is important to recognize that the United States is not a democracy, never has been, and must never become one. A democracy is 5 wolves and 3 sheep voting on what is for dinner. This country is a union of 50 sovereign states under a constitutional republic, each state with different values and views. The NPV compact eliminates this key differentiator and effectively eliminates the voters in small states like Maine from having any role in selecting our president.
