Deep appreciation for Southport ice rink
Dear Editor:
As the winter season draws to a close, I want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the dedicated volunteers who spent countless hours maintaining the Southport Community ice rink. While this year’s cold temperatures and consistent snowfall provided a perfect foundation for exceptional ice, it also demanded an extraordinary amount of physical labor. From the early-morning or late-night shoveling of the rink’s surface to clearing the perimeter after every storm, these volunteers worked among the cold and snow to ensure our school and community had a well-loved sheet of ice to skate on. Their quiet, behind-the-scenes devotion turned each snowfall and cold snap into an opportunity for more movement, laughter, and connection with friends and family.
Our gratitude also extends to the Boothbay Civic Association for their generous donation toward the community rink. This gift is being used to purchase a full range of ice skates, ensuring that a lack of equipment, or outgrowing a pair, is never a barrier to a family enjoying time on the ice. In the spirit of Rachel Carson, who invited us to maintain a "sense of wonder" at the world around us, there is something magical about the sense of community on Southport. You can see, and more importantly, feel the devotion of our volunteers, which is a reminder that the beauty of our island is matched only by the beauty of the people who care for it.
