The Declaration of Independence

Dear Editor:

In just a few days we will be celebrating the birth of our nation states. The 13 original states were New Hampshire, New York, Delaware, North Carolina, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Georgia and Connecticut. I say nation states because that is what was proposed and formed through out our founding documents. We are Mainers, a separate and independent nation state. Just like the any other nation throughout the world. The newly formed nation states delegated 19 enumerated powers to conduct international affairs between other nations of the world to The United States of America. This was done through the Constitution for the United States of America.

Quote the last paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:

“We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the Authority of the good people of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connections between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

These 56 men that signed the Declaration knew full well that they would be hunted down and if caught would be tried by the crown and hung for treason. These great and honorable men who envisioned and birthed the nation states that formed America. I thank you.
