Curtain up at the Lincoln Theater
If you missed our first-of-the-year Oscar and Golden Globe nominated movies, “Dallas Buyers Club,” you can catch up with “The Book Thief,” which opens on Thursday, Jan. 9, and will be followed next week by Judi Dench in “Philomena.” It is a wonderful time of year to warm your hands around a bag of hot popcorn while enjoying a feature. This year we also continue our intention to show three to four free offerings each month. This month, we’re pleased to screen the current episodes of the popular PBS series, “Downton Abbey.” Now, how cool is that?
National Theatre Live: The Habit of Art (reprise)
Thursday, Jan. 9 - 2 and 7 p.m.
Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W. H. Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for 25 years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station. Alan Bennett’s play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art. Screens
