CSD financial woes

Mon, 01/08/2024 - 4:00pm

Dear Editor:

Our local CSD Board of Trustees and School Board run one of the largest organizations in the region.  Together they are responsible for a $10 MM ++ budget.  Our Trustee board's agenda never includes a financial report.  Monthly expenses are never publicly discussed or approved.

Halfway through this fiscal year on Jan. 2, Superintendent Kahler asked the Trustees to approve a $450,000 loan due to cash flow problems. He stated the loan would be paid back by the end of the fiscal year, but he planned to take out another loan at the beginning of the next fiscal year. The Trustees approved the loan without knowing the terms. No trustee inquired which budget line item will become overdrawn due to the unplanned interest expense.

We need more financial oversight, accountability and transparency.

We all should be alarmed.
