Crow Point Yoga: classes for healthier body, life

With her arms outstretched, knees slightly bent and left leg turned out, yoga instructor Sharon Goldhirsch erects the warrior pose. This is one of about 20 yoga poses she teaches her “Yoga Over 60” class, which meets three times a week in Boothbay Harbor.

Goldhirsch isn’t just the instructor. She also co-owns the business, Crow Point Yoga, at 24 West Street. The business opened last March providing various yoga programs for both beginners and advanced, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and massage therapy.

On Dec. 9, three Yoga Over 60 students -Susan Bremer, Roxanne Smith and Holly Fulmer - participated in the 90-minute class in which they bend, stretch and strengthen muscles most people don’t know they have. The women began taking the class when Goldhirsch and her husband, Doug, opened the studio.

Bremer and Smith became intrigued about taking yoga after six months of watching the remodeled building take shape. Fulmer was motivated after hearing others talk about Sharon Goldhirsch’s ability to teach yoga.

The women haven’t missed a week since the studio opened.

Yoga helps the body remain flexible and strong, according to Sharon Goldhirsch. Fulmer credits the class for assisting her recovery from shoulder surgery. She believes Sharon Goldhirsh makes the class a worthy weekly experience.

“I really enjoy Sharon’s positive and upbeat spirit. It really makes you want to get up in the morning and be here,” Fulmer said.

Yoga has been a big part of Sharon Goldhirsch’s life. She began yoga at age 21 to manage her kidney disease. She became a certified yoga instructor in 1991. And she met her husband in 2000 at a Massachusetts yoga retreat.

The Goldhirsches decided to open Crow Point Yoga to take advantage of the area’s supply of qualified instructors.

“I realized there were a lot of really talented yoga teachers and talented healers in the area,” Sharon Goldhirsch said. “So we created a space where everyone could come and share their healing and teaching gifts.”

Besides Sharon Goldhirsch, Crow Point Yoga includes 10 other instructors: Brittany Warner, Jeff LaRochelle, Pamela Wiley, Ethan Walker, Trish Monroe, Judy Milinowski, Eric Lorrain, Ryan Cope, Heather Casey and Dianne Daniels.

Doug Goldhirsch may soon be joining the ranks of the center’s instructors. He is studying to become a certified yoga instructor. The boat builder plans on teaching a limited schedule.

“I may teach a class or two,” he said. “There is not a lot of men who practice yoga. I’d like to develop a class especially designed for them. Men aren’t as flexible or have as good balance as women. So my class would help men improve in both areas.”

The yoga studio is equipped with a massage room, changing area and shower. Crow Point Yoga also provides mats and pillows for the various classes. So all you need is to wear comfortable clothes and bring a great attitude for better balance, flexibility and health.
