Contact information about church lighting
Dear Editor:
The Fishermen's Memorial, "Oars At Rest," on Atlantic Avenue, Boothbay Harbor was placed on a parcel of land given to the Boothbay Region Fishermen's Association by the late Bishop of Portland (O'Leary) in about 1983.
The parcel includes only the piece where the dory sits; approximately one-half of the “park.” There are restrictive covenants within the deed. Ref: 1982 Plan of Parcels - Lincoln County Registry of Deeds.
The parcel where the light is located is part of the bequest of land given specifically for a Catholic Church to build on the larger parcel reserving the waterfront property.(s) in the early 1900s. This remaining property has not been conveyed since. Therefore, the lighting of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church predates the lighting of the Fishermen's Memorial. REF: 1970's Summons and Complaint.
The apparent “misunderstanding” as to the responsibility of maintenance of the lighting falls directly to our Bishop Robert Deeley; the assigned Pastor of All Saints Parish, the Business Manaager; and our local representative to the Pastoral Finance Council.
Any complaints about the lighting would have to be addressed in writing to the owner of the property, Bishop Robert Deeley, Corporation Sole. Roman Catholic Bishop of Portland, Very Reverend Robert Deeley, 510 Ocean Avenue, Portland, ME 04103.
