‘The Color Purple’ - the musical at MSMT

    Maine State Music Theatre will open the musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Color Purple” on July 21 and run the show through Aug. 6. The most inspirational show of MSMT’s summer season, the production includes a joyous Grammy Award-winning score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues.

    This intensely moving American classic is a story of hope is a testament to the healing power of love and a striking celebration of life. “The Color Purple” features Jaden Dominique as Celie and Tavia Rivée as Nettie, Maiesha McQueen as Sofia with DeQuina Moore as Shug Avery. Mister is played by Kelvin Roston Jr. and Lawrence Flowers will play Harpo.

    The cast is rounded out by Korie Lee Blossey (Pa), Dori Waymer (Squeak), La’Nette Wallace (Darlene), Nyla Watson (Doris), Tarra Conner Jones (Jarene), Darron Lorenzo (Ol’ Mister), Courtney Blackmun and Mikayla Jane (Sofia sis-ters), Willie Clyde Beaton II (Adam/Band Leader), Devin Price (Bobby), and Ron King (Bartender/Grady).

    The creative team includes E. Faye Butler (director), Flo Walker-Harris (choreographer), Jarred Lee (music director), Jeffrey S. Koger (lighting designer), Ryan Swift Joyner (project designer), Charles S. Kading (set designer), Shannon Slaton (sound designer), Kevin S. Foster II (wig designer), Bottari and Case (costume designers), Kathleen Payton Brown (costume coordinator), and Mark Johnson (stage manager).
