Cobras strike in boys' home opener

Despite striking early, the Boothbay Region High School boys varsity baseball team was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell, 14-1, April 22 against the Carrabec Cobras.
The Seahawks (0-1) responded early despite being down, 5-0, after one frame.
Starting Seahawks pitcher Linc Simmons struck out the first batter of the young season, but Carrabec rallied to score five runs. However, Boothbay wouldn't have to wait long to get on the board.
Lead-off man Julian Aponte reached on a passed ball after striking out, then stole second and third before scoring on an error with two outs that allowed Simmons to reach first.
Simmons then settled down and mowed down the Cobras in order in the second inning.
But, the Cobras would strike back in the third inning, when they amassed four hits and seven runs to knock Simmons from the game. Reliever Jared Spofford came in and fanned the first batter he faced, but Carrabec had piled up a 12-1 lead.
Spofford would pitch another scoreless inning before giving way to Jacob Ripley. The Cobras manufactured two more runs to make it 14-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Seahawks would try to rally in the bottom half of the inning. Zach Vise doubled with two down then took third base ahead of No. 3 batter Nate Colcord, who walked. However, the game ended with a pop-out to Carrabec's catcher.
Boothbay's next home game will be 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 29 against Monmouth.
