Classrooms to playgrounds, Southport Island parents work together
The Southport Central School Class of 2000 has fond memories of moving into their new classroom in 1993. The addition was built with volunteer help from children’s parents and many work days and cookouts brought the project together to expand our island school. School bus driver and custodian, Bruce Lewis, even put on a pig roast to help feed the volunteers.
Miranda Sherman Filipiak recalled, “Once we moved into our new classroom, one wall of the room would slowly be taken over by a letter from the alphabet each week as we’d learn the letter and sound, and a song went with each letter. My class all loved Mr. D (Dave Daigle) and his ability to make us laugh, whether it was his silly faces or Mr. Critter voice. He genuinely cared about each of us."
