Christmas Eve service in Newcastle
A memorable, music-filled Christmas Eve service is planned for the Second Congregational Church, UCC, in Newcastle. While the formal service will begin at 5:30 p.m., a prelude, starting at 5:15, will feature four octaves of English handbells playing familiar carols and Christmas songs from the balcony. The final piece, “Carol of the Bells” arranged by Kevin McChesney, features the full range of the bells.
In addition to scripture, prayer, and reflections, the congregation will join in singing the traditional carols accompanied by organ and timpani. The Chancel choir will sing four pieces of music from the 17th to the 20th century. The Reverend Nancy Kennedy will lead the service. The public is invited.
The service will end with the singing of “Silent Night” as the congregation lights candles to carry the “light of Christ” out into the world.
