Boothbay appoints French as shellfish warden
Boothbay is the final Boothbay region town to hire a shellfish warden. Selectmen approved Boothbay Harbor police officer Garrett French as warden. Previously, the Southport, Edgecomb and Boothbay Harbor selectboards all appointed French.
He replaces Brent Barter. Town Manager Dan Bryer told selectmen Dec. 11 that French was recruited by Boothbay Harbor Town Manager Julia Latter. "She went to the police officers, and asked if anyone was interested, and he volunteered," Bryer said.
Selectmen also appointed planning board member Mike Thompson to serve as a backup local plumbing inspector. Thompson also serves as Southport's code enforcement officer and LPI. "He is very capable, and has been doing this type of work for quite some time. We are glad to have him," Bryer said.
In other action, selectmen approved a wharves and wiers permit for Boothbay Sea and Science Center. The applicant received approval to rebuild a recreational pier damaged by the January 2024 storm. The rebuilt pier is 86 feet by 24 feet. The center plans to raise it four feet and build a 4-foot by 15-foot access ramp at the pier's head.
Selectmen cancelled the next scheduled meeting for Dec. 25 due to the holiday.
