Bruce M. Crosby
01/01/1948 - o1/01/2019
Bruce Crosby died under care at Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough on New Year’s Day, also his seventy-first birthday. He had been valiantly battling cancer for nearly 20 years.
Bruce was born on Jan. 1, 1948 in St. Paul, Indiana.
He is survived by his wife Edee Deen Crosby, two brothers, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Bruce served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970, mostly in Thailand, gaining the rank of private first class. Having learned to dive in the Army, as a civilian, he continued diving for a construction company and also for scallops.
He and Edee were caretakers on Damariscove Island for several summers and also lived and worked at Newagen Inn. An excellent carpenter, Bruce worked on many area houses and oversaw the care of a number of residences in the region. A kind fellow with a gentle spirit, he would quietly lend a hand to help someone. He could be seen shoveling the entrance to the Southport Library after a storm or broadcasting sand on an icy driveway for a woman who had broken her wrist.
He had a curious nature and a grand sense of humor.
Bruce and Edee enjoyed traveling that in recent years took them on ships to many countries. He was always willing to listen to what people had to say, eager to find out about their story, and easily laughed when they presented something amusing. He loved learning. He loved the outdoors and gardening as well as the coziness of their wood stove heated home.
Bruce was a good friend and a comfort to many. Having lived on Southport Island since the late ’70s, he is very much missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
