Brown’s ‘Bleacher Award’ bestowed to editor
On a snowy morning, Feb. 27, Register editor Kevin Burnham looked up from his laptop to see someone he doesn’t see in the office too often, his granddaughter Ella Watts, who was on a break from her studies at Boothbay Region High School. Seconds later, Burnham’s daughter, Sara Watts, and police officer and school resource officer Larry Brown appeared in front of Burnham’s desk.
“I’ve got something for you, Papa,” said Ella.
Burnham was quite surprised to receive one of Brown’s “Bleacher Awards,” made from the former wooden bleachers at BRHS. Brown has bestowed several of these awards over the years to people in the community since the bleachers were replaced in 2015.
The plaque reads, “Kevin Burnham, Midcoast Sports Legend, Class of 2024.” It was a follow-up to Burnham receiving a Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Legend Award last fall.
Burnham, who has covered local sports and more for the Register for 38 years, thanked Brown for the plaque and honor, and for having his granddaughter present it.
