Brown bag discussion of ‘Green Book’ Jan. 29

Sun, 01/20/2019 - 7:15am

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Quaker Meetinghouse at 77 Belvedere Road in Damariscotta, will be a brown bag discussion about “Green Book,” a movie about an aspect of racism in the USA not widely known outside the African-American community: racism while traveling. The movie has also caused controversy for centering the story of the white man, chauffeur for a black pianist on tour in the South. The movie shows all week at the Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta (Jan. 18-24 <http://www.lcct.org/green-book-pg-13-maine-theater-ev1407.aspx>), but come to the discussion if you're interested even if you haven't seen the film.

Facilitated by a Quaker at the Quaker Meetinghouse <https://midcoastfriendsmeeting.org/>, and part of activities People United Against Racism (PUAR) have organized in coordination with MLK Jr. Day (a week earlier), we will have a wide-ranging facilitated discussion in response to questions the facilitator brings, hoping to understand history, hear each other, become aware of present-day dynamics, and perhaps come to understand as individuals what our next step can be in responding to racial injustices. Come if you're interested in history, racism, other oppressions, travel issues, or how movies and books are made about these issues. Beverages and cookies will be there, and you are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch to eat as we talk. Sponsored by the Midcoast Outreach and Peace Center and the Coastal Senior College, this brown bag lunch conversation is free and open to the public; no registration is required.
