BRHS mock election goes straight blue ticket

Boothbay Region High School students have spoken through their mock election. Student Body President Glory Blethen polled 24 freshmen, 16 sophomores, 15 juniors, 19 seniors and 25 staff members on their preferences for president, U.S. senator and representative, Maine House District 89 and Lincoln County probate judge.

Blethen said the mock election, one of several events during Spirit Week, formerly known as Homecoming, is a chance for each grade to score more Spirit Week points.

Said Blethen, “Students will have various opportunities to dress up, decorate doors, vote and participate in trivia questions within the classroom. We wanted to make a fun two weeks for students, while following the guidelines … By giving some incentive to vote, it also informs students on the different candidates this year and the importance of voting.”

In results, for President and Vice President: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris (D) 69 votes or 69.7%; incumbents Donald Trump and Mike Pence (R), 28 votes, 28.3%; Roque De La Fuente and Darcy Richardson (Alliance Party), one vote, 1%; and Jo Jorgenson and Jeremy Cohen (Libertarian), one vote, 1%.

U.S. Senate: Sarah Gideon (D), 64 votes, 64.6%; incumbent Susan Collins (R), 32 votes, 32.3%; Lisa Savage (Green Independent), three votes, 3%; and Max Linn (I), no votes.

U.S. House: incumbent Chellie Pingree (D), 72 votes, 72.7% and Jay Allan (R), 27 votes, 27.3%.

State House District 89: incumbent Holly Stover (D), 62 votes, 62.6% and Stephanie Hawke (R), 37 votes, 37.4%.

Lincoln County probate judge: incumbent William Avantaggio (D), 64 votes, 64.6% and Meegan Burbank (Unaffiliated), 35 votes, 35.4%.
