Boothbay Region High School (BRHS) celebrated Homecoming 2023 Oct. 2-7 with class competitions and community activities.
"Homecoming is a week that students come together to promote a strong student culture in the following areas: student collaboration, student creativity, and student leadership,” wrote Student Body President Colby Allen. Allen said students work together on projects, coming closer as a class and as a school.
Each day, students dressed up reflecting themes selected by student government: Monday, Rhyme Without Reason; Tuesday, Surfers versus Bikers; Wednesday, Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness; and Thursday, the grade’s theme: Freshmen, dinosaurs; sophomores, video game Mario Kart; juniors, space; and seniors, prison break. Each grade decorated its hallway and a parade float based on these themes. Judges chose winners for hallway decorations, with first place going to seniors, followed by the sophomores, freshmen and juniors. The sophomore class won the float competition, followed by the juniors. The seniors and freshmen tied for third place.
Dr. Tricia Campbell, principal, said, “The Boothbay Region High School spirit is alive and stronger than ever thanks to the efforts of the students led by the BRHS Student Council. I could not be more proud as I watched the students collaborate and come together to plan and execute their class hallways and plan their floats for the parade. The BRHS staff and faculty are joining in the excitement, and you can feel a buzz in the air. I love seeing everyone dress up in the daily themes for dress-up days. I love seeing the smiles on their faces. Seahawk Nation is soaring with excitement!”
A pep rally-style assembly was held Wednesday with other class challenges. The seniors won the day with victories in tug-o-war, lip sync battle, and balloon pop competition. The sophomores won the class meter. The event kicked off with BRHS Band playing “Crazy In Love” (Beyonce) and “Seven Nation Army” (The White Stripes). Faculty participated in the lip sync battle, dressing the parts, and performing “Bye, Bye, Bye” (NSYNC) and “Oops! I Did It Again” (Britney Spears).
“The Homecoming (and Winter Carnival) activities offer all BRHS students a time when they can collaborate and have creative, silly fun together! It's a joyful but competitive week when students are excited and enthusiastic; rushing around to gather tools and materials to create interesting hallways and floats while they are dressed in hilarious costumes! It's definitely a time for students to have social interactions, nurturing a sense of belonging and as an outcome, making happy high school memories,” wrote Manon Lewis, faculty adviser to BRHS student government. “Students include the community in Homecoming. They procure flatbeds and trucks from community members and businesses. They parade the floats they create through town accompanied by firetrucks and police cars! They also offer a bonfire for the community to view and enjoy.”
Homecoming festivities continued throughout the weekend with field hockey and football on Friday, and a dance Saturday evening at Southport Town Hall.
