Updated: Boothbay Election Day turnout 'good, but not a record'
Boothbay Town Manager Dan Bryer called voting on Nov. 5 a "flawless election" with another strong turnout, but it wasn't a record breaker. On Nov. 13, Bryer reported "lines were long and election workers were busy throughout most of the day."
This year, (updated on Nov. 20), 2,225 of 2,898 00 (78.9%) voters cast either an early or Election Day ballot in Boothbay, according to town election records.
"During the busiest times, there were two lines, and all the booths were filled. I know it was an emotional election for many, but it wasn't the largest turnout," Bryer said. "The first Obama election had the largest turnout, but this one was close."
Town Clerk Andrea Lowery led the Election Day effort as warden and assisted by what she called a "Great team." Election workers included Sheila Sears, Sharron Oakland, Lana Brandt, Lucian Laurie and Tracy Smith. Nicole Campbell served as deputy warden. Tracey Hodgdon Hyson served as registrar.
In other action Nov. 13, Bryer praised Boothbay Fire Department for its recent fundraising prowess. He cited several significant recent examples. "There has been a significant increase in their fundraising. The recent "Bite Before Your Light" is (one) example. The Cornhole tournament, earlier this year, was another a big funding raising event as well."
At a previous selectboard meeting, Bryer mentioned the town hadn't received a Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT). During his manager's report, Bryer said he spoke to CMBG officials and they would sent one. "There have been a lot of changes over there, and the PILOT just got lost in the shuffle," he said.
Selectmen approved three permit renewals. Cabbage Island Clambake received a Class I, II, III, and IV restaurant liquour license renewal. Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens received a special amusement permit renewal. Boothbay Playhouse Events, LLC received a self-sponsored event liquor license renewal.
Selectmen approved three wharves and wiers applications. Roger and Christine Vooght received approval for modification of a pier in Linekin Bay.
The Allan K. Miller and Pam Burke Living Trust received approval for repairs of a pier and dock. The project is on Sunset Rock Road.
Nell L. Tharpe received approval to replace a pier and elevate a boathouse damaged during the January storm. The property is in East Boothbay within the East Boothbay Village District and shoreland overlay district.
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27 in the conference room.
