Boothbay Region Housing Trust breaks ground for 7 homes

Tue, 01/10/2023 - 2:00pm

The Boothbay Region Housing Trust, a nonprofit 501 (c)(3), has broken ground to build seven affordable homes in Boothbay Harbor. Trust and town officials gathered at the site for the ceremony on Tuesday morning, Jan. 10.

The three bedroom, two bath homes will be located off Park Street and will be in walking distance to the town, YMCA and schools. The homes will be modular, built in Maine and finished by local carpenters, plumbers and electricians. The cost of the homes will be over $380,000, and will be sold for $287,000. The homes will be sold to first-time homeowners who qualify for the affordable homeownership program.

Governor Mills has identified affordable housing as one of the most pressing concerns in Maine and has, with the legislature, allocated funds through the Maine Housing Authority that the Boothbay Region Housing Trust has applied for with the help of Matthew Eddy, executive director of Maine Council of Midcoast Governments.

The Trust has received, grants, and donations totaling over $450,000. Additionally, a line of credit to move forward with construction has been secured. The Trust will now enter a fundraising campaign to raise the additional funds necessary.

The Boothbay Region Housing Trust has a website at www.BoothbayRegionHousingTrust.com, where more details can be found as well as a link to a video produced by Darrell Gudroe, showing interviews with local businesses, officials and townspeople.

The Boothbay Region Housing Trust is appreciative of the support by many local professionals who have helped to get this project off the ground. The Trust anticipates completion of the homes to be in the fall of 2023. Those interested in applying for a home may find application guidelines on the website.
