Boothbay Region Garden Club features Lisa Colburn
The May 14 meeting of the Boothbay Region Garden Club will feature guest speaker Lisa Colburn, author of “The Maine Garden Journal — Insider secrets from Maine people who love to put their hands in the dirt.”
Colburn was born and raised in a rural Maine community in northern Maine, where it seemed everyone gardened. The rocky soils and cold temperatures of the St. John Valley challenged her.
Now living in Orono, she gardens in heavy clay soil that stays wet too long and then dries out into a solid, impenetrable mess.
Colburn has been active in organizing garden education programs and frequently speaks on a variety of ornamental garden topics. She has a passion for very tiny alpine plants and extremely large-leafed plants. Colburn’s ornamental and food gardens expand yearly because “there are always more plants to try.”
Colburn’s presentation discusses how gardeners throughout Maine contributed to and assisted in creation of the “The Maine Garden Journal.” She will talk about the most recommended trees, shrubs, perennials, spring bulbs, tropical plants as well as house plants. Garden tours, garden art and more are discussed in this whirlwind tour of many Maine garden-related topics.
Her book will be available for purchase and signing at the meeting, which will take place Wednesday, May 14 at St. Columba’s Church at 1 p.m. Everyone interested in gardening is invited to attend this timely meeting.
Club members are reminded to bring their plants to the meeting for the plant sale, May 17.
