Boothbay math team fourth in state
Boothbay Region was one of about 90 Maine high schools who braved the foul weather on Tuesday, April 4 to drive to the Augusta Civic Center for the 41st annual Maine State Math Meet, an all-day event filling the convention floor with the best students in the state. For Boothbay, the trip was well worth the effort.
When the results of all ten rounds had been tallied, the Seahawks found they had earned the fourth highest score among the 23 high schools of similar size — and the very best score of any public high school in their class. Kents Hill School was first with 384 points, North Yarmouth Academy was second with 328 points, Saint Dominic Academy was third with 311 points, and Boothbay was fourth with 239. Only one other school scored over 200 points.
All team members scored points and contributed to the team’s final tally, with particularly strong performances achieved by junior Connor Demmons, seniors Sam Betts and Griffin Kane, junior Max Hoecker, and freshman Will Perkins. Also scoring points for the Seahawks were juniors Kyle Alley, Hayden Brewer and Hailey Greenleaf and sophomores Gabbie Boord and Loren Genrich. Lovely Uberita and Rowan Kristan served as team alternates at the state meet.
The Maine State Math Meet has been held every year beginning in 1977 and has grown to a major event — featuring the second greatest number of simultaneous high school competitors in any event, athletic or academic, in the United States — second only to the Florida State math meet. With close to 1,000 students and 200 proctors, graders, runners, announcers, and tech operators, the meet is a spectacle to see. This year the capability was added to post real-time results on the cloud for all to see during the course of the meet.
Boothbay’s fourth place finish was among the school’s top performances over the past twenty years and it followed the team’s Mountain Valley Conference championship last month and the team’s second place finish, to Kents Hill School, during the six month regular season.
The math team has been practicing and competing since last September and is coached by Peter and Nancy Gilchrist.
