Boothbay Lights flags bring attention to holiday festivities

A blue symbol flying outside Boothbay Harbor homes and businesses is letting shoppers know Boothbay Lights is underway. Townsend Avenue resident Margaret Perritt is the first community member proudly displaying the new Boothbay Lights flags. On Dec. 5, Perritt received her specially designed flag and raised it outside her home.

Perritt is the first flag recipient because she created the banner. Perritt designed the flag to promote Boothbay Lights. She thought the flags would be an excellent way for community members and businesses to promote Boothbay Lights. She was inspired from her days living in Richmond, Virginia when a woman placed a homemade blue flag outside her home with the words “it’s a boy.”

“People just loved the flag and people began knocking on her door asking her where she got it. This led to her starting Festival Flags which is where I ordered this flag for Boothbay Ligthts,” Perritt said.

In November, Perritt solicited others to display Boothbay Lights flags and requested Festival Flags create banners with modified sewn lights on a dark blue background. “I thought it would be great to promote Boothbay Lights and show how unified the community is in this event,” she said. So far, at least five others have ordered Boothbay Lights flags. Perritt is hoping the promotion catches on, and next year flags will be unfurled all over town.

Boothbay Lights is a celebration of several holiday events in Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor from mid-November until Dec. 31. The two towns sparkle with thousands of Christmas lights strung promoting the region’s shops, inns and restaurants.
