Boothbay Landscape Committee submits plan
The Boothbay Landscape Committee, a group of seven local residents, presented the plan they have worked on since convening the Selectman approved committee in December 2017. The plan, which received the Selectman’s approval in February, was presented at two Community Meetings, the most recent on Friday, March 23.
The group began their process with the creation of the following Vision Statement which guided their work:The Boothbay Landscape Committee will create a landscape plan that helps complete the enhancement and preservation of Boothbay Center; it will be welcoming, attractive, and inspired, fitting the tone and manner of the heritage of our community.
The plan consists of four sections: Route 27 to Country Club Road; the Boothbay Common and Town Hall; the roundabout; and Corey Lane.
The plan begins just after Hall Funeral Home and includes a group of flowering trees along the roadway that will remain lower in height so as not to interfere with wires above. In addition, there will be maple trees added near the corner of Country Club Road.
The Boothbay Common will not see any changes to the landscaping at this time, however, opposite the Common by the church, more flowering trees will be planted as well as a maple to the right of Bet’s Fish Fry and another by Back River Road.
The perimeter of the Town Hall parking lot will include a mix of deciduous and evergreen shrubbery to complement what is already in place. Flowering cherry trees will accent the post office.
The roundabout will offer a nice display of seasonal color including lilacs, hydrangeas, and spirea as well as a fir tree backdrop.
Plans for Corey Lane --- the gateway to Trevett, Barter’s Island, and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens – include an entry accent of birch clumps and a canopy of red maple trees underplanted on the left side with forsythia, red twig dogwood and winterberry. At the post office entrance off Corey Lane a group of fir trees will provide screening as a consideration to neighbors for oncoming headlights.
The plan is designed to offer color from late April through October with some of the selection of plants chosen offering winter interest as well. Committee Chair Linda Redman said, “We worked as a team taking into consideration many variables to make this plan as attractive and functional as possible, while creating a welcoming attractive entry to our town. We hope both our community and the many visitors who come here will enjoy this nice addition to the region.”
