Last week we sadly reported on the memorial service for Past Commodore Jack St. John. This week we are hit with yet another tragedy, the passing of member Al Rofe. He divided his time between Texas and Maine and spent many hours on the phone each day and night plying business with folks in the far East.

He loved his home on Barters island and even more his boat “Sunshine,” which hangs at the mooring today to remind us of his friendly smile and care for each one of us our thoughts and prayers go out to Sharon.

Another Friday night drawing was held and once again the winners were not present. The first name drawn was Patty Berger and a second drawing was Joe Maziarz, but alas neither were present so the drawing next week is for $400 dining room credit. Matthew did take pity on those present and a bottle of Faustino 7(VII) was won by Dexter Morrison in a special drawing between those present.

Saturday was the annual tennis Calcutta co-chaired by Sumner Lipman and Claudia Greene. There were 26 tennis players divided into two teams: The Stripers and The Mackerels. The captains were Cynthia Edwards and Dick Stevenson for the Stripers and Mary Ann Reynolds and Paul Whitehead for the Mackerels. At the end of a highly handicapped tournament, it was fortunately tied. A barbecue followed with a promise of another Calcutta in 2015. Fun was had by all!

Sunday was a beautiful day on the water and the club was an extremely popular location for boat folks; 18 beautiful Lyman runabouts gathered for their annual rendezvous which included a luncheon, a talk by a descendant of the founder of Lyman Boats and concluded with a parade.

There were many folks from Beverly Yacht Club, which visited on Friday night still in the mooring field, and we seem to have a large delegation of visiting yachtsmen every night of the week. Sunday night we observed many folks arriving towing Optis in preparation for the Maine State Opti Championship, which was held Monday and Tuesday. More than 78 competitors in both the Green Fleet and Championship fleet raced under the direction of Bob McCann and PRO Dr. Chris Wallace.

Tuesday night after the OPTI awards, the Past Commodores of BHYC gathered for dinner at the invitation of Commodore Lee Krow. The combined contribution of these folks to the history and success of the club can only be measured in amazing thanks for extensive service.

It is good to see General Manager Jim Matel back at his desk and all over the club as always. He appears to be fully recovered and his smile and willing attitude did not suffer at all during his absence.

Another face we will miss is Geoff McCusky, who has ended his summer with us to join the faculty of the Hawken School in Cleveland. Wee wish him well and hope that next summer he will be able to return to Maine from Ohio.

Next Sunday is a Commodore’s Cup sail race and that night George Denton will be featured speaker at the Sunday Night Series. Monday night is the Junior program’s annual banquet and awards night and Tuesday night Danny Beal will appear for his last gig of the summer. Rumor has it the Chef George had slaughtered yet another Angus Steer and prime rib will be the result.

Wednesday night is the Cruise Awards dinner and Thursday is Flu Shot Day.
