The past week was one of sellout events ... all different in character but similar in member response. They included the kayak trip, Louis Sell Authors presentation on Washington to Moscow  and how could we ever forget all the bright music created by motors (outboard and inboard) and excited crews at the Day Afloat event. Did you catch that “Sell” /”Sellout” play on words?

That day was as beautiful as they are made and the crowd of participants was as enthusiastic as ever. The Event Team (Jeff and Ella Long, Tom and Laura Blake, and  Commodore Rob and Sandy Wheeler) came up with a never before used theme of Broadway Shows. Extremely artistic posters ... created by the masterminds ... with subtle hints to the musical depicted on each of 21 posters tested the minds and memories of contestants peering intently from their perches on some 12 participating boats.

There had to be a “Carousel” and a “Sound of Music,” but there were also less popular or well known shows as well. The boat with all posters identified and located was NO REGRETS – Capt Bob Reiser! Second place was actually initially a tie but tie breaker questions, administered secretly in the Casino hailed BRITE & FAIR ( Bill Hunt) ending up in second and with the mandate that they run the event next year. That put KNOT ON CALL (Krug) in third  followed in order by MELINDA B (Welter), SPIRIT (Chapman), tied for sixth, NORTHSTAR (Hare) and BROWN EYED GIRL (Metz), then MAB (Newton), MARLEE (Mitterling), NOMAD (Rowan), LOON (Mutch) and LADY JANE (Warner).

A near record 77 arms were stabbed with the newest flu vaccine at the annual Shots and Shots event led by Dr. Paul. For an eye doc he sure knows how to get the inoculations done! That night we had a near record dining crowd for a non event dinner. Hristo and his crew served about 82 folks and how about David Schoentag single handedly serving up over 300 cocktails! And also how about the Barters Island chefs who brought copious goodies to enjoy. This week starts the “bring something to share time”  for all attendees.

Due to Day Afloat and other complications there was no tracing last weekend but there was  a Wednesday series and it was interrupted by a deluge which left racers and race management folks totally soaked. Your reporter was on the water also and my notepad was turned to pulp so the results come from memory which says  that Rear Commodore elect Jon Dunsford sailing BITTERSWEET took the honors followed by Richard Rush in SARABANDE, Eric Hakanson in CHARISMA, and Cathy Latty sailing BABY Z. Ken Colburn and Cole Brauer each sailed a Tech Dingy but the sudden strong wind gusts and heavy rain cancelled their plans. Final Wednesday Series races will be Sept. 5.

New launch hours are  10 a.m. to sunset daily until Sept. 15th when they shorten to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dining room hours remain the same but we all need to be reminded that keeping up the dining numbers for both lunch and dinner in September is key to that continued availability.
