Last Thursday, Dr Judith Kildow gave a very interactive presentation of the “Blue Economy.” As we know, Maine is very dependent on the Blue Economy with fishing, ship building, aquaculture and tourism. Dr Kildow also emphasized the importance of another important factor in the “New Blue Economy,” which is the scientific research and innovations that drive the Blue Economy, several times referring to the amazing work being accomplished at our own Bigelow Laboratory. Dr Kildow began her presentation by asking us what we thought were the stressors and challenges to the Blue Economy. Well, we aren't a shy group, so there was a lot of discussion and opinions. As usual, a lot of laughter too. Dr Kildow filled in our ideas by citing research from several prestigious institutions including the National Ocean Economics Program, which she founded. She then led us through some of the international and U.S. programs and policies that hopefully will address some of these challenges. One of the most important factors of healthy oceans is that they produce an estimated 50 percent of the oxygen on Earth. Suddenly the “Blue Economy” had a much more personal impact since we all know the importance of having healthy air to breathe. She concluded by talking about some of the tools being developed by research and industries to hopefully ensure the Blue Economy continues. All in all, a very interesting presentation and discussion. Thank you Dr Kildow.
This Thursday it's another fun, innovative program, Yard Work Day. Bring your rakes, clippers, lawn mowers and other “implements of destruction.” We’ll trim, rake leaves and spend some time taking care of this wonderful Clubhouse yard. We'll have a summer cookout of hot dogs and burgers. Charlotte Jameson will keep the Turpentine Club stocked for fortification. It's always a fun night.
Tonight, Monday May 12, your Board of Directors meet on a Zoom call. If you want to join us, email President Alden Wood and he will send you the link. Club members are more than welcome to join this meeting. Your Board of Directors need all the help we can get.
