Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club
Does one say Happy April Fool's Day, or maybe in our case, with this cold snow and freezing rain, it might be a different salutation. What would you call it? But last Thursday it was still early spring, I heard a Phoebe call in the morning and there were moths at my porch light when I got home after our meeting, what happened!
Last Thursday Marie Pelletier from the Finance Authority of Maine was our speaker. She is an education resource counselor for FAME. She was a lively speaker and in 20 minutes gave us a comprehensive rundown of Maine State programs available to help fund you or a family member's secondary education, trade school and some high school programs. FAME serves as the administrator for the state’s Next Gen 529 program, a tax advantaged college savings plan. I was surprised that a grandparent that lives in Maine can open one for a grandchild who lives in another state. Marie also talked about the amazing Alfond Grant of $500 for children born in Maine.
This week we welcome our own Patty Seybold and Doug Lockwood to hear about their recent trip to the Uganda Rural Development & Training and the African Rural University in Uganda, Africa. You'll hear how a group of empowered girls and women have helped over 100,000 people in rural Western Uganda move from poverty to the middle class.
The following Thursday, April 10, is the annual Rotary Interact Spaghetti Supper. Always a delicious and fun time and a chance to support our wonderful Boothbay Region High School Interact Club members.
The Big, Gray Rotary Barn reopening is this Saturday, April 5 at 8:30 a.m. The clean-up crews have been working hard, the place looks great. It's gotta be spring.
