I love a mystery!
Mon, 03/20/2023 - 11:00am

Early in March another storm had hit the northeast. Here in our little corner of the world we were covered with a blanket of enough snow and ice that our residents were encouraged to stay home. That first morning as I looked out my sunroom window I felt nothing but a strange eerie silence. There was no movement except for the sea mist. I could not see the red nun at the entrance to Little River nor could I hear the bell buoy or fog horn. The birds, ducks and squirrels were lost to me.

Later in the day the mist had lifted or gone out to sea. The wildlife had returned as if nothing unusual had happened but I was left with thoughts of how sea mist or fog might play a role in someone's life. I could picture a foggy London Street, a lone soul walking quickly almost running from who or what might suddenly appear in the haze.

Here is an interesting list of mysteries that deal with the sea, tides, fog and mist. Some I have read and enjoyed.

“The Mist” by Ragnar Jonasson. It is his 3rd. in the” Hidden Iceland Trilogy”

“Sea Castle” by Andrew Wayne is the latest in a group of sea thrillers.

“Bimini Twist” by Linda Greenlaw. She is a Maine author and Sea Captain. Her stories take place in (where else but) Down East Maine.

“Something in the Water” by Catherine Steadman. This book was a Reese's Book Club pick.

“House at Sea's End” by Elly Griffiths. A Dr. Ruth Galloway mystery.

“Hidden Depths” by Ann Cleeves. For those of you who love the English Inspector Vera Stanhope.

“Glass Ocean” by Beatriz Williams. A classic historical mystery.

“Sea of Lost Girls” by Carol Goodman. This story is written in the tradition of one of my favorite authors, Daphine du Maurier.

“Water's Edge” by Gregg Olsen. This is the 2nd. In the Detective Megan Carpenter series.

I would also like to take a moment to mention that in February the “I love a mystery book club” gave a 5 star rating to “Bluebird, Bluebird” by Attica Locke. An absolutely great read.

Happy reading mystery lovers!
