We’ve got a great lineup of author talks and special programs throughout August at BHML.

On Thursday, Aug. 1, we’re hosting James Hornor at 2 p.m. for a reading from, and discussion of, his book “Victoria Falls.” “Victoria Falls” features main character James Monroe, a sophisticated American professional on mission for The World Bank in Africa during the early 1990s. Set in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Bombay, India, Mr. Monroe’s journey into authenticity results in a series of failed relationships that reveal the dark, enigmatic recesses of his complex personality and eventually land him in a hellhole prison in Bombay. His tragedy unfolds into an ending that no one, especially Monroe, could have possibly predicted or imagined.

Sounds like James Patterson with more emotionally complex male characters. Definitely on my short list of books to read this summer.

On Saturday, we’ve got a program for the whole family: A Seal’s Journey, at 11 a.m. on the lawn. Join Marine Mammals of Maine as they take you through a seal’s journey from stranding to release and all of the obstacles in between. Learn when it’s normal for a baby seal to be out of the water, when and why you might see one on its own, and when they might need our help.

To get in the spirit of seal rescue, we’ll show “Andre” for our Friday Films movie on Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. “Andre” is, of course, based on the true story of Maine’s famous Andre the seal, who lived in Rockport.

I remember when I was a kid that we had some seals in a little tank at the DMR. Does anyone else remember that? I definitely believed for a very long time that Andre lived in that tank in Boothbay Harbor. But no, he lived in Rockland. Well, close!

On Wednesday, Aug. 14, we’re hosting a lecture on the Apollo moon landing. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Robert Stengel, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University, will reflect on the 50th anniversary of the historic landing.

The talk will examine Project Apollo from the viewpoint of Stengel’s time spent at the Draper Laboratory from 1968-73 where he was principal designer of the Apollo Project Lunar Module manual control logic used for all moon landings and where he went on to create a preliminary design for the Space Shuttle atmospheric flight control system.

Near the end of August we’ve got Ken Gloss of Antiques Roadshow fame on Aug. 22, followed by author Penny Goetjen on Aug. 24.
