“April is the cruelest month, breeding

Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing

Memory and desire, stirring

Dull roots with spring rain.”

These are the opening lines of T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land,” which I quote not because April is National Poetry Month (though it is), but because I’m writing this in the midst of an April blizzard (practically) and it just feels cruel.

More snow is on the way for Wednesday too.

Sigh. Well, the heat’s on at the library. Come by and grab a book of poetry to get you through the next few weeks. My favorite is actually not Eliot, but Bill Watterson. Every Calvin and Hobbes collection opens with a poem, still others are tucked in among the comic strips, and they’re hilarious.

Next week will be a busy one here at the library. It’s school vacation week from April 15 to April 19, so we’ll once again host drop-in Lego days on Tuesdays, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, April 16 to April 19, from noon to 4 p.m. We’ll provide the snacks and Legos, you bring the creativity!

P.J. story time on Wednesday, April 17 will be replaced with a P.J. movie night. We’ll show “Bernie the Dolphin” at 5 p.m.—wear your jammies, bring your stuffed animals, and cuddle up on the bean bag chairs with popcorn and enjoy the show.

Then don’t forget that Chewonki will be on the library lawn on Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m. (rain location: Boothbay Harbor Fire House) with their Bug Mobile.

That event is one part of our third annual Earth Day Fest, which runs from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the lawn (if it’s not snowing! We’ll all be at the Boothbay Harbor Fire House if the weather is bad). Also joining us are Bigelow Lab, Boothbay Region Land Trust, Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District, Boothbay Sea & Science Center, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Crow Point Yoga, Lincoln County Gleaners, Plastic-Free Peninsula, and the Anthor Church. Each group will tell us about how their work intersects with the environment and provide a craft or activity for families. We hope to see you there! (We also hope that it’s going to be sunny and 60 degrees!)
