Boothbay football fortunes on the rise

The Boothbay football team is on a bonafide winning streak. The Seahawks recorded their second straight victory Sept. 29 with an 18-8 win over Telstar at Sherman Field. Boothbay’s victory was a mixture of a smothering defense and three rushing touchdowns by running back Maddox Cusumano. Boothbay scored all its points in the first half and raced out an 18-0 lead.

“Our defense won the game,” said defensive tackle and team captain Brett Smith said. “We stayed aggressive, and hit hard the whole game.”

In consecutive weeks, Boothbay has beaten Mt. View and Telstar after a devastating loss to Old Orchard Beach. The loss resulted in a lot of soul-searching by the 14-man squad led by captains Slade Balsdon, Josani Farmer, Andrew Fowlie and Smith.

“We started practicing harder, training harder, and leaders being leaders,” Balsdon said.

The Seahawks also believe a special offensive wrinkle has sparked the team’s rushing attack. Coach Ed Crocker implemented the Power-I during a playoff game last year. The formation features a quarterback, fullback and tailback all aligned one behind the other. Smith is the fullback who never carried the ball in his football career until last year. “It works well for us. Brett really softens up the middle of the defensive line which allows Maddox to run outside,” Crocker said.

Boothbay scored all three touchdowns running plays in the Power-I.

The Boothbay defense allowed only one touchdown but recorded four turnovers. The Seahawks intercepted one pass and recovered three fumbles.

On Oct. 6, Boothbay (3-2) hosts Sacopee Valley of Hiriam (2-3) at 7 p.m. The game is part of Boothbay Region High School’s Homecoming Weekend. Boothbay is in fourth place in the Crabtree point standings and Sacopee Valley is fifth.
