Boothbay Town Manager Dan Bryer took time out from his job to walk across the street from the town office to Boothbay Common to buy a pint of blueberries and a half dozen cucumbers on Thursday, July 21 at Boothbay Farmers’ Market.

“I had a limit on how much I could spend,” he said as he stopped to talk and to show off his purchases. He added: “This breeze really helps,” as the bright sun and temperature near 80 F didn’t deter the many shoppers attending the weekly event.

Another Dan, Dan Sortwell, owner and “roastmaster” of Big Barn Coffee in Wiscasset, who heads up the market held on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon, said the attendance varies each week.

“It depends on what’s going on,” Sortwell said. “Like everything nowadays, peoples’ lives are busy.”

From apple vinegar to zucchini, the selection of items is vast. Goranson Farm in Dresden seemed to be the busiest during the mid-morning visit as Jan Goranson was seen rushing around, filling the boxes and bins with the many different vegetables and flowers the farm offered.

The number of vendors also varies each week. On July 21, there were 23 vendors, most of which were selling their wares under pop-up tents with signs showing the prices and items available.

Boothbay Farmers’ Market has been on Boothbay Common for the past 19 years. The Market will be held through Oct. 6, according to the news release announcing the May 2022 opening.
