The Boothbay Farmers Market draws crowds

The farmers market on the Boothbay Town Common was teeming with fresh vegetables, meats, breads, flowers, cheeses and pretty much everything else edible, healthful or just plain pretty on July 16.
It was also teeming with people and their dogs. Sue Witt was there purchasing fresh poultry, vegetables and mushrooms. She said she comes every Thursday after yoga.
“I’m a member of the Goranson farm share, so in the winter I get a box of whatever they decide to share. In the summer I can come here and choose whatever produce I want,” said Witt. She said she likes going to the farmers market for the sensory experience and because she sees people who she might not ordinarily see. She was being selective about the type of mushrooms she would serve with a steak dinner.
It was the first cool, dry morning we've had in Midcoast Maine for a while, and the overall atmosphere was upbeat and bursting with positive energy.
The stands, which are set up every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon May through early October, are brought to Boothbay from farmers, fishermen and artisans from all over the region.
Dharma Farm, from the town of Washington, was having a hard time keeping up with customers who were lined up to purchase their wide array of very colorful and obviously fresh vegetables.
Ann Springhorn was there representing Micromainea from Westport Island with their micro greens and shoots, including a tray of large, bright, almost neon, yellow ones. They were corn shoots, “not to be confused with sprouts,” according to owner Springhorn. They are surprisingly sweet and flavorful.
There was a long line at the Beryl's Pastries (from Richmond) stand, with customers eagerly awaiting their chance to get the substantial “little” cream cheese cakes, scones, cookies rugelach, tarts and pies. Some people were saying, “I need one of those,” as opposed to “I want one of those.”
These and many more stands featuring flowers, fruits and vegetables, cheeses, breads, meat and poultry, goat milk soaps, yarns, candy honey wines, coffees, baskets, Asian foods, preserves and jams, mushrooms, and even candies.
The weekly market has become a popular destination on Thursday mornings. Make a point of going this summer, and you'll see why. Or check out the Boothbay Farmers Market website. For more photos see the Boothbay Register photo gallery.
