Boothbay Community Garden will reap rewards
How many times have your driven by Miss Piggy on Route 27 in Boothbay on your way out of town and noticed the big garden just across the street? When I last drove by I noticed that there were nicely planted rows, and wondered more about who was behind this garden plot. I found out that Joan and Chetley Rittall’s son, Scott, has big plans for this patch of land.
He has made the gardens into something that will benefit the whole town — it’s a community garden. If you are interested in eating organic vegetables, it’s as easy as volunteering to plant or weed a row, then help to harvest the vegetables on Fridays when they are ready. Potatoes, beans, squash, tomatoes, peppers are just some of the vegetables that have been planted this year. Scott also has several small garden plots for rent if you’d like to have your own garden but don’t have any space at home.
The best part of the community garden though, is that about 80 percent of the vegetables grown will be donated to our local Food Pantry. Scott knows all too well about the Food Pantry, as it was only a few years back that he needed help. Now, he’s back on his feet and wants to give back to the community that helped him when he needed it. He has big plans for his garden in the coming years; right now his greatest need is for volunteers. So, if you have any interest in helping feed the community, or putting some beautiful organic vegetables on your table, please give him a call at 207-350-1059.
