Better together: Stargazing and book love at the Merry Barn

Mon, 04/25/2022 - 1:00pm

It is a special event that can bring together people across ages, interests, and backgrounds. The Merry Barn’s most recent Community Literacy Event did just that – gathering folks in collaboration and curiosity, creativity and literacy, nature and science. In celebration of Earth Day, Peaks Island artist, author, and illustrator Jamie Hogan read her newest book, Skywatcher, and shared her artistic process. Kids and adults of all ages colored Jamie’s hand-drawn stargazing masks, and the barn was full of Luna moths, star bears, owls, and loons.

As twilight settled, everyone moved outside to explore the magnificent night sky with a telescope, starscope, and planispheres. Slowly constellations appeared. The night stars twinkled as kids laughed and played. Children with feet and arms donning glow bracelets ran and danced, played games, made new friends, and looked up. The evening was magical. Devices disappeared for over two hours, and the night was filled with fresh spring air, a new story, and creative acts.

Not only did this event bring people together, it brought local organizations into partnership. Support from Boothbay Region Land Trust, Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust, and Sherman’s Maine Coast Bookstore made this event stronger.

We’re thrilled to be offering these monthly events, which are free and open to all. Our next Community Literacy Event will be Saturday, May 21. Mark your calendar. We hope to see you there!
