Photography has been my hobby, my passion for close to 40 years.

My photographic journey began when, as a teenager, I bought my first camera, a 35mm Minolta range finder with the money I earned from a summer job.

My passion really took hold when I was in college after taking a variety of photography courses in chemistry, physics and art. I grew up five miles (as the crow flies) from New York City, in New Jersey, so much of my initial work was cityscapes.

Having grown up in the urban landscape, I longed to spend more time in less crowded, natural spaces. I developed a love for the outdoors and spent a lot of time hiking and photographing in the Catskills and Adirondacks of New York and the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

In the early 1980s, I started to travel to places I dreamed about visiting —- Alaska, desert of the southwest, Pacific northwest, northern California, Colorado, Hawaii. More recently I have been to Nova Scotia, Scotland, and Norway. I have been traveling back to these same places and many new ones, taking my husband and two sons along so they can experience and enjoy the natural beauty of these places. I love to travel for the sake of taking photographs, but my favorite place is Boothbay, our second home.

I specialize in seascapes, landscapes, and nature abstracts using both film and digital cameras.

I currently live in Atkinson, New Hampshire, but I have summered at our home in Boothbay for over 30 years. My favorite places to photographic in the Boothbay area are Ocean Point and Ovens Mouth.

I'm a member of the Boothbay Region Art Foundation and regularly exhibit my work there during the summer months. My photographs have also been selected for The Maine Photography Show several years in a row and, in 2013, my abstract of bubbles under ice, “Celestial” won third Place in the Black and White Category. I have also exhibited my work at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, The First Bank in Boothbay Harbor and Art at the Waterfront Park during Harbor Fest.

To support my photography habit and family, I work as a materials scientist for an electronics company in New Hampshire evaluating new materials and processes for circuit boards used in high speed servers and defense systems.

In my spare time I usually have a camera in hand waiting for those moments of dramatic light. I'm also a gallery moderator for Nature Photographers, an online magazine. You can view more of my work at www.evamcdermottphotography.com.

Examples of McDermott's photographic vision will be exhibited at the Southport Memorial Library as Artist of the Month for September and October during regular library hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

The library is located at 1032 Hendricks Hill Road on Southport Island.
