Be part of the Memorial Day Flag placement

Mon, 05/16/2022 - 5:00pm

Dear Editor:

Memorial Day is rapidly approaching and I am looking forward to seeing veterans of all generations marching with us or riding in the trolley. More on the parade details next week.

As is our tradition, we (members of the Legion and other volunteers) will be placing American Flags on the over 850 veterans' graves in our area's cemeteries this Saturday, May 21. The Legion's Americanism Officer, Christopher Armstead, coordinates this event but each cemetery has a "lead" who is in contact with the volunteers who typically support placing the flags at that cemetery. Anyone who would like to help at a particular cemetery should contact the Legion (633-4487). I will be leading the Flag placement ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery on Barters Island Road, as I have in the past, at 9 a.m. All are invited to be part of that event.

I encourage parents and grandparents to bring their kids of all ages to be part of this meaningful event. Spending just a few minutes on Saturday remembering our veterans who have passed away will make this Memorial Day even more meaningful.
