Bayville Buzz

The cleanup continues around the Village after the goings on of the past weekend. Due to record crowds and the number of cars that were creatively parked along our roads, the street sweepers were delayed in making their way to ground zero. Thanks to all who made sure that fun and full bellies were had by all! The event took an international flavor this year with a visit from a delegation from Venezuela.

Special shout outs to co-chairs of the BIA, Diana Frascella and Laura Allison; Mark Spencer for the tunes and the dogs; David and Greg Merrill for their culinary talents; Phil Robitaille and his son Greg for their labor and trucking fleet; the Ice Cream Scooper Sisters, Jill, Connie and Tika and the infamous Candy; and all the roadies involved in moving all the heavy equipment.

It appears that the numerous Sweating to the Oldies training sessions down on the dock must have paid off, as no medical services were required by anyone this year. Thank you Richard Simmons!

Here is a summary and a roster of the kids early morning activities; Team 1 participated in an egg hunt. The Bayville seagull dropped off her eggs the morning of the scavenger hunt filled with toys and candy for the 6 and under crowd. Team 2 and Team 3 raced around Bayville in an "Amazing Race" style competition. They had one hour to decipher codes and clues to find their way to 5 pit stops and a final ending at the Bayville Dock. Both teams were competitive but it was Team 2 who won. They finished in 28 minutes while Team 3 (the older kids) finished in 49 minutes. There are still questions as to what was going on during those 21 minutes. Kids?

Team 1 (Egg Hunt) consisted of Josie Rosenbloom, Wally and Olivia Merrill, Oliver LaPointe and Dominic and Vincent Duncan.

Team 2 (Scavenger Hunt) was Cora Coleman, Emma LaPointe, Anna Rosenbloom, Mallory Strojny, Camden Jordan, Presley Frascella and Gabby Towns

Team 3 (Scavenger Hunt) was Hannah Strojny, Oliver Jordan, Wyatt  Wilson, Josie Frascella and Juvon Peacock.

Great job by all and thanks for participating!

After a one year hiatus, Nate and Julie Merrill once again schooled all opponents in pickleball to take home the Golden Paddle. Mark Spencer and John Merrill gave it all they had throughout, but in the finals, their advanced ages became glaringly apparent with each hard fought point.

Congratulations to Amy LaPointe who was crowned this year's Ruler of the Sea! As past winners can attest, her life will never be the same. That cottage has produced so many champions over the years that Simon and Shuster will soon be publishing a collection of recipes that have brought Wayside so much success.

For those with anything left in the tank, the fun continued on the dance floor at Mine Oyster where Motor Booty Affair brought disco back to life.

Sunday brought another beautiful day - yes, two in a row - where all recovered in their own way.

In news that is 100% factual, David Roberts, son of Phil and Karen, has been promoted to regional sales manager (congratulations David!) for Renaissance Selections, a wine importer and marketing company, and has been traveling throughout the country. Recently, he has been canvassing Maine which allowed him to rediscover Bayville and give his expense account a break at the Bayville Inn. His sister Rachel will also be checking in at the Inn in August and the Roberts kids might even overlap a day later this month.

Of course, this Saturday, Aug. 5, will be another blowout with the Bayville Village Corporation meeting commencing at 9 a.m. I really hope the bucket of rotten tomatoes I saw is merely for compost and not the new chairman. Come and see what transpires.

At 5 p.m., all is forgiven and Social Hour starts. The trash talking has already begun by a couple of entrants in the Bayville Buzz concoction competition. Come bring your creative drink that best sums up life in Bayville. Just make sure to bring enough to share!

Then at 6 p.m. the Lobster Bake begins. Thanks to the Roberts for all their hard work - Phil is setting his traps now. If you haven't signed up yet, you are probably too late. Too bad for you!

Hardscrabble has been in full Operation Dad mode as ours arrives on Aug. 2. He looks forward to finally getting here and his kids and grandkids can't wait!

Don't forget that Aug. 13 at 9:45 a.m. is when the exodus begins to Cabbage Island for the annual swim and paddle. A reader (nice to know there is at least one out there!) asked if the swim is open to non-Bayvillains. The answer is yes and if anyone else would like to join, the only requirement is that there are support kayaks for each swimmer. Just send your contact info to me, thejeffallison@gmail.com. Looks like the weather this week should be one of the best of the summer, so enjoy!
