Bayville Buzz
Summer is in full swing as evidenced by the fact that dock space was at a premium this past Sunday. Yes, definitely a first world problem, so there will be no complaining. It was nice to see the town dock, Lobster Wharf and Linekin Bay Resort all so busy. No matter what you were doing, Sunday was a spectacular day to be outside.
The beautiful weather actually began Saturday afternoon. Was it coincidence or was it Hilary Lafferty shining her love on her family and friends who had gathered at Rock Cottage in celebration of her life which ended all too soon, after a losing and courageous battle with cancer. There were lots of stories to be told of Hilary's years in Bayville as she started coming here as a baby. Our condolences to husband Wayne and daughters Kristin, Ashlyn and Megan. Her smiling face will be missed by all who knew her. A really unique moment was when some younger kids requested that Megan sing with the band. It was beautiful and though there were many tears in the crowd, Megan kept her composure throughout.
Let’s hope for the same type of weather this Saturday, July 29, when the Village wide celebration and competition commences. Last week's column mentioned neighbors helping neighbors, well not on Saturday. All niceties end at 8 a.m. when the Pickleballers serve it up while trying to stay out of the kitchen. At 10 a.m. the kids, who, unknown to them, kept from witnessing the carnage, are allowed out for the Scavenger Hunt, which I'm told may resemble “The Amazing Race.” After a bit of time to nurse injuries and egos, the competition starts again for everyone at 2 p.m. with the opening ceremony of the Waterfront Festival. Who will be this year's winners? One person I know won't be winning the Musical Chairs is one Mr. Brian McNamara whose antics last year have resulted in him serving out a five year sentence. As the immortal Ricky Bobby said, "remember, if you're not first, you are last." That may be true in car racing, but not for the Waterfront Festival. Anyone who shows up to compete or spectate is in for a fun time and is a winner. Not only is it fun but you also get fed! There is the Ice Cream Social and hot dogs while events take place.
Speaking of food, don't forget to sign up for the Lobster Bake happening on Aug. 5. Help Phil, Al and crew who have graciously volunteered their time to keep the price at only $40 per person for two lobsters, clams, corn and more. Unless you don't like lobster, you would be a fool to miss the fun. Of course, cocktail hour will again include some creative Bayville Buzz concoctions. Don't forget to bring yours to share with the judges. If there's a clear cut winner, which there wasn't last year, an as of yet unnamed distiller will begin regional distribution.
That morning the always raucous annual Bayville Village Corporation meeting commences at 9 a.m. Come hear the comedy duo of Phil and Al trade their brotherly barbs. The weekend kicks off on Friday, Aug. 4, with movie night at the recently upgraded Community House grounds.
New appliances are in the news as the Moorings cottage has a new dishwasher and Hardscrabble a new fridge - where the ice maker actually works. Exciting stuff!
In news that truly is exciting, Friendship Sloop Celebration returned from Rockland to Linekin Bay with Greg, David and Julie with two trophies. One, the Jarvis Newman Trophy for the first Pemaquid sloop and the Herald Jones Trophy for the first place winner in Division 1 (under 27 feet). Many Merrills, along with Steven Rogers, contributed to the success this year. Congratulations on your success! It is always a beautiful site to see the classic Celebration at sail.
Enjoy the calm before the chaos of Saturday and send your news - or anyone else's - to thejeffallison@gmail.com
